Caring for Caregivers

February 20, 2025

Friday, February 21, is National Caregivers Day. A day to celebrate and honor those caregivers that take care of a loved one or us.

When it comes to cancer, a caregiver is a person who provides physical and emotional support to someone with cancer. Caregivers can be family members, friends, or partners. They can help with a variety of tasks, including daily needs like bathing and dressing, household tasks like cleaning and cooking, errands such as shopping and picking up medications, paying bills and other financial responsibilities, scheduling appointments and providing transportation, emotional support, and so much more.

Caring for someone going through cancer treatment can be extremely difficult and can take a lot out of a person. That’s why it is important to remember to take care of the caregiver. Caring for a caregiver involves helping them take care of themselves physically and emotionally. This can include providing support, encouragement, and time to rest.

If you are currently a caregiver, please remember to also take care of yourself and utilize these tips:

Support
Talk to other caregivers: Find comfort and advice from others who understand what you’re going through
Join a support group: Connect with others in similar situations
Ask for help from family and friends: Let others help you with tasks or errands

Self-care
Eat well: Choose nutritious foods and get enough sleep
Exercise: Regular physical activity can help you feel better
Take time for yourself: Make time for personal activities and hobbies
Access respite care: Short-term assistance from an outside provider can give you a break
Get preventive care: Attend check-ups and follow recommended health guidelines
