Each year in November, Lung Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of prevention, early detection, and access to the latest treatment technologies. At the Pacific Cancer Institute of Maui (PCI), we are dedicated to helping our island communities understand the risks of lung cancer and encouraging proactive steps that can save lives.
While lung cancer remains one of the most common and serious cancers worldwide, it’s also one of the most preventable and treatable when found early. Greater awareness and access to advanced radiation therapies are giving patients new hope right here in Hawaii.
Understanding Lung Cancer Risk Factors
Lung cancer can affect anyone, not just those with a history of smoking. While smoking continues to be the leading cause, other risk factors include:
- Long-term exposure to secondhand smoke or air pollution
- Radon gas exposure in homes
- Occupational hazards, such as asbestos or chemical fumes
- Genetic predisposition or family history of lung cancer
In Hawaii, where outdoor living and cultural emphasis on wellness are so central, raising awareness about these risk factors helps residents take charge of their lung health before symptoms appear.
The Importance of Early Detection: Low-Dose CT Screening
Because lung cancer often develops without symptoms, early screening can make all the difference. Low-dose CT (LDCT) scans are currently the most effective way to detect lung cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.
You may qualify for a lung cancer screening if you:
- Are 50–80 years old, and
- Have a history of 20 or more pack-years of smoking, and
- Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years, and
- Are in good enough health to undergo potential treatment if lung cancer is detected
LDCT screening can detect small nodules or abnormalities before they become advanced, allowing patients to begin treatment earlier and improving survival rates significantly.
